Bostonians for Youth: Together, Let's Change the Odds

May 2, 2012

BOSTONIANS FOR YOUTH
An Initiative of the Trinity Boston Foundation

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Together, let's change the odds for Boston's youth.

The odds for the young people of Boston – our children – are not good.  The dropout rate is high and the graduation rate low.  Jobs are scarce.  And the streets of many neighborhoods – our streets, our neighborhoods – are not safe.

Bostonians for Youth is a call-to-action to change the odds for Boston’s youth.  The event celebrates those on the front lines who avert violence and console and empower those touched by it. The event is a catalyst of inspiration to inspire all of us to get involved

Each year, Trinity Boston Foundation invites two organizations to partner with us.  We plan the event together and divide the net proceeds equally.  The relationships we build lead to programmatic collaboration, increasing coordination and effectiveness within the social sector and strengthening the social fabric of our city.

The 2012 Partners are:

  • Trinity Boston Foundation - Trinity Boston Foundation is dedicated to changing the odd for Boston youth through programs that serve youth, their families and the community. TBF's programs include: TEEP, a 6-year program that offers values-based, holistic, year-round support for students from 7th grade through high school and on to college.  100% of students who have completed TEEP graduate from college on time; SOLE TRAIN: BOSTON RUNS TOGETHER is both a running and mentoring program for Boston youth; TRINITY BOSTON COUNSELING CENTER increases access to effective mental health care for youth, families and community members as well as self-care and resiliency training to youth workers.
  • Justice Resource Institute - JRI was founded in 1973 and operates effective programs for a wide array of youth and adults including those who might not otherwise have access to quality care.  Some of their many programs include JRI's Trauma Center, which provies comprehensive services to traumatized children and adults and their families.  Boston GLASS provides LGBT youth with community space that is safe from bullying, harassment and forms of violence which lead to a disproportionate rate of suicide among these youth.  JRI is currently training an agency-wide staff team who will be advanced "first responders" providing emergency trauma support to the broader community.
  • The Youth Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative The Youth Violence Prevention (YVP) Funder Learning Collaborative is a network of businesses, foundations, government agency funders, and key experts formed to share knowledge, identify funding gaps and promote dialogue to help funders and businesses coordinate and strategically align their efforts to increase their impact on youth violence in Boston. The YVP Collaborative takes a public health approach to youth violence prevention and is focusing its initial efforts to ensure adequate funding support to five communities along the Blue Hill Avenue corridor: South End/Lower Roxbury, Dudley Square, Grove Hall, Bowdoin/Geneva, & Morton/Norfolk. The Collaborative will use its share of the proceeds from Bostonians for Youth to invest in community-based organizations working effectively in these neighborhoods to promote peace and positive outcomes for youth.
