Programs

TEEP offers year-round supportive, challenging, and enriching activities for Boston area middle and high school students.

Middle School Programming
Summer
At the core of TEEP is an intense, all-day summer program designed especially for Boston Public middle school students. All students must enter the program as rising 7th graders (after completing the 6th grade.)

We dedicate mornings to academic classes (math, language arts, art, and music), taught by certified public school teachers with support from high school counselors. Class sizes are very small (10 to 12 students), with a student-leader ratio of 5:1.

These classes have two goals:
1. To combat documented summer learning loss, and
2. To develop a love of learning and self-confidence that students take back to school in the fall.

During the afternoon, we engage participants in a wide variety of cultural and other enrichment activities, many of which are completely new experiences for the students.

Academic Year
During the school year, TEEP re-engages and supports its middle school students with:
1. A series of four weekend retreats focused on empowerment, life skills, and reinforcement of the values of the 5 R's, and
2. A 12-week, intensive preparation course to support students through the admissions processes of selective high schools.

High School Programming
Leadership Development Program (LDP)
The LDP is a four-year partnership between TEEP and the students. During monthly activities, students learn leadership skills, set personal and academic goals, and self-monitor those goals. LDP students also gain practical leadership training by:

  • Serving as counselors/role models to the middle school students in the TEEP summer program
  • Serving as tutors/role models to the middle school students at retreats throughout the year
  • Getting involved in their home communities

Many LDP students work as counselors in the summer program and as mentors for middle school students throughout the year. In doing so, they not only gain valuable work experience, but they also deepen their understanding of the 5 R’s and their role in community.

LDP Freshmen and sophomores focus on leadership development and staff training. Junior and senior students receive support for college preparation (SAT prep, college admissions visits, assistance with applications, and investigation of non college options). LDP alumni are currently enrolled at Wheaton College (MA), University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, University of Charleston, Syracuse University, Johnson and Wales University, and Holy Cross.

The goal of the LDP is that all students will graduate from high school and either attend college or engage in a specific career path (i.e. trade school, the military, City Year, Year Up, etc.).

Family Resource Center
In 2008, we will launch a Family Resource Center that will connect TEEP families with the vast number of education-related resources and programs available in the Boston area.

The coordinator and volunteers will work with each middle school family to ensure that each TEEP student has access to quality after-school programs during the 7th and 8th grade years and to high school admissions resources during 8th grade. Volunteers will work with students on high school and college admissions prep. The goal is that each volunteer would work with one student and their family to help them complete all of their high school or college admissions and financial aid documents on time.

"I was really shy, but TEEP has empowered me to go outside my box and meet new people. I'm a more well-rounded person. I've learned how to be a leader."
